What a diabetes cure means to one mother |
Kelly MacLeod, a mother who shared her diabetes story in our “What a Cure Means to Me” campaign says it was intuition that led to her son, Jordan, to eventually being diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. “My sister-in-law was here in the morning and she has diabetes herself,” said MacLeod. “My husband suggested to her to check Jordan’s sugars because he was having a lot of symptoms and with a mother’s intuition I was taking him to the doctor’s office later in the week anyway. When she checked him, the glucometer read HI. Jordan has been living with diabetes now for 14 years since first being diagnosed at 23 months. For her, a cure would mean less worry, freedom for her son and not having to check his sugar levels through the night.

Dan Poole joins Team D for his next run in Reykjavík |
Dan Poole is a proud member of Team Diabetes, doing his first 10km with the team at the 2012 Calgary Marathon. His story is not uncommon, but it is inspiring. Dan is 43 and just over a year ago, he had a heart attack. After waking up in hospital under close medical attention, Dan decided it was time to make a decision. Living with diabetes for over 30 years, he admittedly didn’t take care of himself as well as he could have. He didn’t check his blood sugars, monitor his diet or exercise regularly. He decided it was time to begin living a positive, healthy lifestyle. |

Pregnancy is a time of anticipation and celebration and can be a great time for checking in on your overall health. Although some women are at greater risk than others, the Canadian Diabetes Association 2008 Clinical Practice Guidelines for the Prevention and Management of Diabetes in Canada recommends that all women be screened for gestational diabetes between 24 and 28 weeks using a gestational diabetes screening test. Although the diagnosis should be taken seriously, there are ways to manage it. |
