Diabetes Day at BC Legislature & Release of BC Insulin Pump Report

On May 16, 2012, the Canadian Diabetes Association hosted a Diabetes Day at BC Legislature in Victoria, BC and released a new report, The Economic Benefit of Public Funding of Insulin Pumps in British Columbia. This report demonstrates that a strategic investment into expanding the insulin pump program will lead to better diabetes management for thousands of British Columbians living with type 1 diabetes and provide significant cost savings to the healthcare system through reduced incidences of costly diabetes-related complications.

The Canadian Diabetes Association Invests More than $7 Million in Research

In 2012–2013, the Canadian Diabetes Association (CDA) will be funding 35 new and 71 ongoing research grants and awards across Canada. This year’s total research investment is $7.2 million, demonstrating the Association’s commitment to investing in excellence in science and innovation. The research being supported will help address important issues relating to the prevention, management, and treatment of diabetes and diabetes-related complications.

Many Canadians Can’t Afford an Insulin Pump

This year, Austin Baron will graduate from high school and move to a new province for college. Thankfully, the insulin pump and essential supplies Austin uses to manage her type 1 diabetes are covered by a publicly funded insulin pump program in Saskatchewan. Without this program it could have been a choice between paying for her education, or paying for the pump that has dramatically improved her life. We want to ensure equal access to insulin pumps for all Canadians – you can help us change that.
