Beyond the Basics: Meal Planning for Healthy Eating, Diabetes Prevention and Management (BTB), is a food and nutrition meal planning tool for people living with diabetes and is an expansion of the Canadian Diabetes Association’s nutrition tool, Just the Basics.

Beyond the Basics is compatible with Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide and with the systems used in Quebec and the US. This resource provides clear information about food groups containing carbohydrate (Grains & Starches, Fruits, Milk & Alternatives, Other Choices), where one serving of a food in each of these groups will contain 15 g of available carbohydrate.

The Beyond the Basics: Meal Planning for Healthy Eating, Diabetes Prevention and Management poster and resource is available for purchase from the CDA in English and French.

Find helpful hints from expert diabetes educators, additional tools plus food lists to help you support your patients as they learn more about diet and nutrition.

Longer lists of foods to be used with Beyond the Basics

Due to space restrictions, the Beyond the Basics poster contained only a limited number of foods. This longer list of foods will allow for greater variety in meal planning. The foods are listed within their food group in alphabetical order, with the "choose more often" choices first. The larger selection of foods will make meals more interesting and enjoyable for the whole family.

The food groups have been separated to make it easier for you to download the section you are interested in.

Encourage your patients to purchase a copy of Beyond the Basics: Meal Planning for Healthy Eating, Diabetes Prevention and Management as well as the poster and together they can learn more about their food choices and nutrition.
