Why should I start my training now for a spring or summer event?

With summer quickly coming to an end, the fall is the perfect time to start getting into your “training routine” for a spring or summer Team Diabetes event.

With many clinics starting months from now, why not give yourself a head start and begin integrating your training into your weekly schedule now. Don’t wait to get into the “habit”. With our good ol’ Canadian winters it’s so easy to get off track, convincing ourselves it’s better to wait until the weather clears to get out for our workouts.

If you start now while the weather is still stellar, your “habit” alone will help motivate you to get out on that not so nice…. seventeenth dark, dreary day in a row in Vancouver, or the week long stretch of -20 days in the Prairies… and you know those are the warm ones!

Make sure it compliments your work/life balance. Start writing it in your calendar now, and anyone else’s calendar it might impact. Let your family know that, for example, from November to May, you will be gone every Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 6:00-8:30 pm and every Sunday morning for a few hours. When they know what your running or walking schedule is, they will be your biggest cheer leaders and help get you out the door on those crazy, hectic days we all have.

This scheduled routine also helps you stay on top of your progress and enables you to better recognize the difference between just not wanting to go for your workout, and your body actually telling you that you need to be kind to it and give it a little break.

Starting these “habits” now will give you that solid base in both mind and body to help get you through the harsh winter training season and ready for your spring or summer event!
