Vienna, The City of Music

Vienna is one of those cities that capture one’s imagination and makes you wonder what it must have been like to live in one of Europe’s premier cities before the distractions of today’s world. No traffic or mobile devices to draw our attention away from the stunning architecture around every corner. No radios breaking the silence as you sit in the middle of a perfectly manicured garden surrounded by the sweet smell of roses and twittering of birds. Despite all the modern conveniences though, it is still possible to be transported back in time in Vienna.

Known as the “City of Music”, Vienna was home to some of the world’s preeminent composers such as Mozart, Beethoven and Hayden. Concert halls and other venues abound throughout the city and still play host to second to none orchestras and famous solo performers and groups such as the Vienna Boys’ Choir.

The numerous palaces and great houses are a testimony to the fact that Vienna was a favourite location for many of Austria’s royal families and wealthy citizens who enjoyed the rich art and cultural fabric that still draws people today.

Between the architecture, galleries, museums and stunning parks, you will be pressed to see even a fraction of this amazing destination in one visit. In fact, there are over 150 palaces, 100 galleries and museums and numerous other notable historic and modern sites. Add to that an abundance of outdoor attractions, restaurants and unique shops and you have a dilemma on your hands...where to start!

Before you immerse yourself in all of that though, you must first cross the finish line. The Vienna marathon offers a marathon and half marathon, both of which will give you a preview of what you’ll soon be exploring at a much more relaxed pace post-race. If you want to run with 3 friends, they also offer a marathon relay. The course itself is fairly flat and well supported, attracting thousands of people from all over the world, from 1st place contenders to those of us who are just happy to get the coveted finishers medal.
