Keep on Track with a Training Buddy!

Some of the most common reasons people use for not getting out for their run/walk/cycle workout is that their schedule is too busy, they have trouble getting motivated or they can’t decide what to do. And these excuses can come from people who don’t have half as much going on as a Team Diabetes participant! If you find yourself using any of these excuses for not sticking to your training schedule, a training buddy can make all the difference.

Don’t have a training buddy? A great place to meet one is at your local store. Most running stores offer free, bi-weekly drop in runs as well as in-person training clinics that may align with the timing of your Team Diabetes event. Many bike shops offer weekly, casual rides or are affiliated with a club. These activities are a great, no-pressure way to meet others in your neighbourhood who have a similar schedule and goal as you.

After a few sessions, you’ll get to know everyone a little better and likely gravitate towards one or two people who not only train at the same pace, but also have a similar personality and outlook as you. Before long, you may find yourself with a new training buddy who will help you stick it out on those rainy Sunday morning rides or cold Tuesday night runs.

We are all ultimately responsible for sticking to our own training schedules, but knowing someone is waiting for you at 7:00am for that 10K run or 80K ride together makes it a lot harder to bail, regardless of how tired you feel or how busy your schedule is. The words of encouragement, an understanding smile and sharing of goals accomplished will help make your training that much more fun as you prepare to cross the finish line.

If you already have a training buddy, you should still consider dropping in for a free group run or going on a few club rides as there are some added benefits. It can add variety to your existing training routine, you can get some training tips from the group leaders, and for those days when you’re training buddy can’t make it, you’ve got a back up! Check out your local running/walking/hiking/cycling stores and clubs to see what is available in your community.
