Join Team Diabetes in Rio or Reykjavik!
Walk or Run in two of Team Diabetes’ most popular destinations - Rio de Janeiro and Reykjavik!
From the white sand beaches and samba of Brazil to the waterfalls and volcanoes of Iceland, Team Diabetes offers once in a lifetime events that span the northern and southern hemispheres!
The Marvelous City
The Rio Marathon, which takes place on July 8, 2012, has one of the most scenic courses in the world thanks to the lush Serra do Mar mountains on one side and famous, spectacular beaches on the other including Ipanema, Copacabana and Flamengo. This event is not just for marathon runners though; it also offers a 6K and a half marathon, both of which are walk friendly!
Once you have crossed the finish line and had a chance to recover, you’ll be faced with a hard decision. What to do first? Hit the beach or the great boutiques? Visit Christ the Redeemer or Sugar Loaf Mountain? Indulge in Brazilian barbeque or fresh seafood? Catch a live performance or test your rhythm and dance the samba until dawn?
After crossing all the local attractions off your “must see” list, you can take your adventures a little further and explore eco-adventure hot spots such as the Amazon. Discover beautiful waterfalls, rugged mountains, mighty rivers and an abundance of unique and colourful flora and fauna.
Whether you prefer the urban buzz of the “Marvelous City” or the natural buzz of the rain forest, Rio and points beyond promise an adventure of a lifetime!
The Land of Fire and Ice
Iceland’s amazing geography will be clearly visible as you run the Reykjavik Marathon on August 18, 2012. The course offers many views across the water to stunning mountains and, if it’s a clear day, you may be lucky and catch a glimpse of Snæfellsjökull, the glacier made famous in Jules Verne’s Journey to the Center of the Earth.
In addition to the marathon, the event also offers a walker friendly 10K and half marathon so there is something for everyone! After the race make sure you rest up as Iceland’s annual Culture Day is also August18th and you don’t want to miss the festivities which run well into the night!
At around 200,000 people, the greater Reykjavik capital area is home to over 60% of Iceland’s total population. Despite the small numbers, the world’s most northern capital has everything you would find in bigger cities including numerous galleries, restaurants, night clubs, museums, shops and more.
Once you have taken in all the local sites, make sure you have time to explore the dramatic landscapes which earned the country its nickname, “The Land of Fire and Ice”. Stunning waterfalls, geothermal hot springs, expansive black sand beaches, imposing glaciers, stunning fjords and dormant volcanoes are just some of the breathtaking features of this unique destination!
