Sticking to Your Resolution

Set a Clear Goal
We all want to be more active but what does that mean? For some it’s being able to walk 5K and for others it’s completing their first marathon. In order to achieve your desired activity level, choosing a goal event can help you stay on track. Signing up with an event with Team Diabetes is a great way to achieve your goal while supporting the Canadian Diabetes Association!

Be Realistic
The surest way to fall short of your goal is to make your goal unattainable. If you are new to running, aiming to run a marathon in 4 months is not realistic for most. Instead, consider setting multiple goals based on progression. For example, “By May I want to be able to run 10K, by the Fall I want to be able to complete a half marathon.”

Have a Plan
Now that you have set your goal how do you get there? By following a plan of course! If you are new to a walk or run regime, there are plenty of resources to draw from. Signing up for an on-line or in-person clinic that aligns with your goal event is one of the most effective ways to stay on track. A set schedule takes away the guesswork and you can tap into the expert advice of the instructors. Make sure you track your progress so that your instructor can provide additional feedback as needed.

Recruit Some Friends
Getting out on a regular basis when you are early into your training can be a challenge, especially during the winter months. Having a few friends to walk or run with gives you a boost when the going gets tough and you are accountable to each other, not just to yourself.

Reward Yourself
Celebrate your successes with rewards that support your end goal. When you hit a milestone, treat yourself to a new running top or jacket. Once you’ve reached your final goal, plan something like a day at the local spa or a special dinner out to celebrate.

Make a Commitment to Yourself
There are many things that we think may be more important than our well being. Outside of an emergency, your commitment to a healthier lifestyle is a priority that you should not feel guilty about making. After all, a healthier you is a happier, more productive you and everyone wins when that happens – your family, your friends and even your colleagues!
