Need help navigating your diabetes?  Check out the Diabetes GPS mobile application!

imageWhen it comes to managing diabetes and making healthy food choices, there is no lack of credible and accurate information available to consumers.  Numerous organizations and associations ranging from the Canadian Diabetes Association to Health Canada produce a wealth of information through printed resources and websites that are widely available.  We are bombarded with healthy living messages from the media, our friends and family and of course from our healthcare team.

While we know that we should use this information to make changes, sometimes we don’t have the tools at our fingertips to show us how to make these changes.  With the busy lifestyles of Canadians showing no signs of slowing down, we’re relying more and more on mobile applications to provide us with information to help us to navigate the demands of day-to-day life and managing diabetes is no exception.  For this reason, the Association has created a mobile application as part of our new suite of Diabetes GPS resources.  The application includes information from the Canada Nutrient File, which is produced and maintained by Health Canada, with nutritional information for over 500 common foods and drinks.  Using this information, the Association has also built a carbohydrate counting application that allows you to import food values from the database into a daily carb tracker.  Another key aspect of the tool is the grocery list that allows you to import ingredients from some of the Association’s healthy recipes into your grocery list as well as adding your own items to the list.  To download the application from the Android Store, click here.  Versions for the BlackBerry Store and the iTunes store are coming soon!
