Inspired to Volunteer, Grow, and Learn
When Daxa Popat’s family decided to close their business so her parents could retire, she found herself looking to take on a volunteer community role to expand her network and meet new people.
“My dad actually noticed a newspaper article seeking volunteer support for the Canadian Diabetes Association so I called the local office,” recalls Daxa. “I felt strongly about getting involved because diabetes is also a disease that impacts my family.”
Daxa’s volunteer work includes community health fairs and displays, data entry, office administration support, as well as a Diversity Community Outreach Liaison. Most recently, Daxa was trained to support the Association’s new Diabetes GPS project.
“I love providing education resources to people at health fairs,” says Daxa. “As I help educate people, I learn more along with them. Every day is a new experience.”
Daxa also joined the Run for Diabetes team and walked the 5 km race in Halifax on September 23.
“Daxa’s dedication and willingness to do any project that needs support is such a tremendous help to our Association,” says Barby Brushett, Volunteer Coordinator. “We’re fortunate to have her involved and appreciate the passion and energy she brings to our office.”
