Iceland - Fire and Ice

Iceland, the Land of Fire and Ice!

Reykjavik, Iceland continues to be one of the most popular destinations on the Team Diabetes calendar. It’s one of those places that many team members don’t have on their “must do” list at first, but once they learn more about it, Iceland not only makes it onto their list, it often takes the top spot!

With a plethora of natural attractions from dramatic seascapes, volcanoes and hot springs to geysers, glaciers and fjords, Iceland captures ones imagination in a way that only countries like it can. Combine this with a rich, cultural fabric that still remains strong after many centuries and you have a destination that ticks all the boxes. Some participants have even met their Icelandic relatives for the first time and, thanks to Iceland’s extensive archives, managed to do some genealogy research while there.

Before all that exploring though, you must first lace up and complete your personal challenge. For the first time ever, Team Diabetes is offering two completely different opportunities for participation at one destination. On August 24th you can walk or run in the Reykjavik marathon or put on your boots and tackle a challenging but doable hiking trail out in the countryside! Which will you choose?

2013 marks the 30th anniversary of the Reykjavik marathon so it was only fitting that Team Diabetes be there to help celebrate this fantastic milestone. Offering a 10K, half marathon and marathon, the event is great for most fitness levels and our infamous shirts often garner cheers fom spectators as team members make their way to the finish line. The relatively flat course starts and finishes in the small but vibrant downtown area and winds through charming neighbourhoods and along the waterfront which offers incredible views of the sea and mountains.

If you prefer to be off the beaten track, join us for “Conquer the Crater” instead! This scenic hike offers 6K, 14K and 24K options to accommodate a range of goals and abilities. Regardless of the distance you choose, all will experience a range of stunning vistas and have plenty of “Kodak Moments” to capture. To ensure your safety and enjoyment while on the trail, team members are grouped according to abilities and lead by experienced, certified mountain guides.

Add Iceland to your bucket list and combine a once in a lifetime adventure with the feel good vibes that come with supporting the Canadian Diabetes Association and someone you know with diabetes!
