Fundraising Around the Holidays
Gift-Wrapping Service
A gift-wrapping service fundraiser typically doesn’t require a lot of planning. All that is required is various gift-wrapping supplies that include wrapping paper, ribbon, bows, gift tags, scissors and tape. You will also need volunteers to wrap the gifts and a large area to do the wrapping.
Contact local merchants and ask them to donate wrapping supplies to your cause. Many will be willing to do so because of the free publicity they’ll receive. Some might even allow you to set up the wrapping station on their premises. Offer both “basic” and “deluxe” pricing options. Scheduling this fundraiser for the second or third week of December is advisable. The closer it gets to the actual holiday, the less time people will have to do the wrapping themselves!
Holiday Candy Count
A holiday candy count is easy to set up and virtually maintenance free. Starting this fundraiser early in the month will help to ensure the highest level of donations possible. The idea is to fill a large glass container with peppermints or other similar holiday candies - ideally sugar free ones - and have a contest to guess how many are in there. Ask local merchants to display them in high traffic areas of their stores. Customers then make a donation, either a fixed fee or the amount of their choosing, to guess how many pieces of candy are in the jars. Award a small prize to the person with the closest guess. Ask merchants if they are willing to supply a gift card for the prize.
Holiday Movie Night
A movie night can be a fun, easy way to get friends and family members together to enjoy a classic, holiday movie. Depending on how many tickets you feel you can sell, the venue might be as small as your living room or as big as a room at your local community centre. Sell tickets that include admission to the movie and the chance to win a door prize. Solicit small prizes from local merchants, and display donor names near the prize table. Selling movie snacks or homemade, baked goods and a beverage or two is a great way to generate even more funds.
