Happy 50th Anniversary, Camp Kakhamela
This year marks a very special occasion for the Association’s D-Camp’s program in British Columbia. Camp Kakhamela, located on BC’s Sunshine Coast, is celebrating a special 50 year milestone. Created in 1962 by Dr. John Hunt, over 10,000 children have attended this D-Camp, where they have learned independence and made life-long friends.
For some families, D-Camp is the first time parents or caregivers have allowed their children to sleep away from their care. Glen Kayll is a D-Camp father who experienced first-hand the value of camp. “My daughter Maggie grew up a whole year because of her one week at camp,” says Kayll.
There are 12 D-Camps located across the country where physicians, nurses, diabetes educators and dietitians are joined by trained counsellors to ensure children and youth enjoy a safe and positive camp experience.
On September 15th, the Association is coordinating a special Anniversary event at the Richmond Olympic Oval. Past campers, medical staff, volunteers and supporters are invited to see old friends and share special camp memories.
