Vic Gouthro of Cape Breton, Nova Scotia is getting set to kick off his annual ‘Going the Distance for Diabetes’ awareness and fundraising event. The passionate and caring father got involved with the Canadian Diabetes Association when his son Scott was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 15.

“When we as a family were first diagnosed, we knew nothing about diabetes,” recalls Vic. “We visited our local Diabetes Education Centre and quickly became introduced to the Canadian Diabetes Association.”

Over the years Vic has been actively involved as a volunteer with the Association including roles as a Regional Chair, National Advocacy Council and Team Diabetes. He takes the commitment to lead the fight against diabetes very seriously.

In his quest to support the Association’s leading edge research, Vic created an event: Going the Distance for Diabetes. This fun-filled event includes cycling, running and walking to encourage children and families involved. New to the activities for 2012 is a colouring contest for North side elementary students and a bike rodeo and safety check program for the children. “It’s important to get kids involved in physical activity to make them aware of the importance of an active lifestyle,” says Gouthro.

This year’s event takes place on Sunday, June 10th, rain or shine starting from the Northside Community Centre in North Sydney at 10:00 a.m. Interested participants can get a pledge form from the Canadian Diabetes Association in Sydney or email arlene.parsons@diabetes.ca.
