Diabetes Day at BC Legislature & Release of BC Insulin Pump Report
On May 16, 2012, the Canadian Diabetes Association hosted a Diabetes Day at BC Legislature in Victoria, BC and released a new report, The Economic Benefit of Public Funding of Insulin Pumps in British Columbia. This report demonstrates that a strategic investment into expanding the insulin pump program will lead to better diabetes management for thousands of British Columbians living with type 1 diabetes and provide significant cost savings to the healthcare system through reduced incidences of costly diabetes-related complications.
The Association hosted a Diabetes Risk Assessment throughout the day, with support from Accu-Check, to which MLAs, legislative and building staff, and the press gallery were invited for a personalized screening of their risk for diabetes. The Risk Assessment drew much attention and 82 people were assessed for their risk of diabetes, a few of whom had elevated findings and encouraged to visit their physician.
The Canadian Diabetes Association presented separately to the Liberal and Opposition Caucuses. Michael Cloutier, President & CEO, outlined the report findings and encouraged government to expand the insulin pump eligibility to British Columbians with type 1 diabetes over the age of 18 years, and Dr. David Miller, endocrinologist from Victoria, spoke to the medical benefits of insulin pump therapy. Thirteen passionate and articulate volunteers shared their personal journey with diabetes and the impact of insulin pump therapy on their health and lifestyle allowing the MLAs to learn firsthand about the seriousness of diabetes and the value of investment in an expanded program. Their stories clearly made an impact as evidenced by the level of engagement by MLAs who showed sincere interest in this issue.
Randy Hawes, Member for Abbotsford-Mission, introduced the Association and volunteers in the House followed by a Member Statement about the seriousness of diabetes and the value of expanded insulin pump coverage.
In addition to formal caucus presentations, the Association also met with representatives from the Ministry of Health and Adrian Dix, Leader of the Opposition, to further discuss the benefits of expanded insulin pump coverage and how we can continue to work together to improve the health of British Columbians.
The Association will maintain communication with MLAs and Ministry representatives to advance our request for expanded insulin pump coverage.
The release of the pump report and activities at the Legislature generated significant media coverage throughout BC and across Canada.
