African Nova Scotia youth turn diabetes education into fun

Nova Scotia—Rap songs and hip hop are not often associated with a serious disease such as diabetes. However, a recent program from the Health Association of African Canadians involved youth groups in a unique and interactive opportunity to learn about diabetes prevention and the importance of living a healthy lifestyle.

On Saturday, November 14 (World Diabetes Day), the video launch of “Taking Hold of our Health” took place in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. The short video features local Nova Scotia youth, showcasing their talent and providing education about diabetes prevention through physical activity, healthy living, cultural awareness and good nutrition.

The project was funded by the Public Health Agency of Canada, in partnership with the Southeastern Community Health & Wellness Centre, the Canadian Diabetes Association, and the Black Cultural Centre.
