Advocates celebrate success after NL government’s recent budget announcement
Newfoundland—The hard work and dedication of the Association’s advocacy volunteers and employees paid off in late March when the government of Newfoundland and Labrador announced its 2010 budget. Advocacy wins include the expansion of the provincial insulin program to include people aged 18 to 25 years, at a cost of $797,700. This is in addition to the $1.4 million for individuals up to the age of 18 years of age (first started April 1, 2007).
As well, the government will invest $300,000 to hire diabetes education staff in Sheshatshiu, Natuashish, Flower’s Cove, Roddickton, Happy Valley-Goose Bay and southern Labrador. This is great news for the Aboriginal people living in and around these communities.
An additional $2.5 million to increase the income thresholds under the Prescription Drug Access Plan will help low-income families who are financially burdened by disease.
On behalf of the Association, a huge thanks to those who shared their personal stories, contacted their MHAs and MPs, and visited the Minister of Health and Finance - thank you for being the voice of Newfoundlanders & Labradorians who live with diabetes.
