A decade of dedication

Ten years ago, St. John’s resident Fred Kavanagh read in his local church bulletin about the need for volunteers at the Canadian Diabetes Association. Having retired from 37 years with the post office, Fred was looking for something where he could offer help while also getting out to meet people. Since he had recently been diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, he felt a connection to helping a cause that personally affected his life.

Volunteering twice a week, Fred enjoys maintaining his computer skills, the friendliness of the staff and, he jokes, “especially being the only man with four women in the office.”

“Mr. K., as he is known to our staff, gives very generously of his time and he’s an important part of our team,” says Carol Ann Smith, Regional Director, Newfoundland and Labrador. “His support enables the Association to reach out and help those who are affected by diabetes.”

“It makes you feel good to know you’re doing something to help,” adds Fred.

April 19 to 25 is National Volunteer Appreciation Week, and the Canadian Diabetes Association acknowledges the countless hours and energy from volunteers across the country.
