Provincial/Territorial Financial Coverage Charts
The financial burden of managing diabetes is often a heavy one, particularly for those who rely on government health plans rather than private insurance. The cost of testing supplies and medication, coupled with high deductibles and co-payments, can mean that people with diabetes in some regions of Canada are unable to adequately and effectively care for their disease.
The CDA’s National Advocacy Council (NAC) and the Office of Public Policy and Government Relations have compiled information about coverage provided by provincial and territorial drug plans. This information appears in the charts below (click on the links provided). Clearly, serious and disturbing cross-country inequities with regard to the cost of and access to diabetes supplies and medication exist within Canada.
The charts offer snapshots of key policies and programs, but they are only a starting point. Changes in government policies, regional differences in the application of policies, and the intricacies of individual situations and circumstances make it vital that anyone looking for specific information contact their provincial or territorial health care plan program personnel.
Every effort is made to ensure that this data is accurate and is reviewed and updated annually. To assist with this process, please contact the Office of Public Policy and Government Relations in Ottawa at to report incorrect or out-of-date information.
